Kyoto Protocol

International Treaty, Adopted in 1997, entering into force in 2005. Runs out in 2012.

The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (link), adopted in Kyoto, Japan, in December 1997 and entering into force in February 2005. The major accomplishment of the protocol is that it sets legally binding targets for 37 industrialized countries and the European community for reducing GHG emissions. The heavier burden of emissions reduction is placed on the developed nations in accordance with the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities." Around 180 nations have ratified the treaty to date.
