Red Cross
Red Cross (International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement)*
Being an umbrella of numerous national and international activities, the officially labeled "International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement" has some 97 million volunteers worldwide dedicated to alleviate discrimination and human suffering nationally and internationally.
The approach to climate change is based upon the nature of the Red Cross being a humanitarian organization. Accordingly, the work of IFRC - which is the international federation of the Red Cross coordinating the national departments - is focused on improving the preparedness and the management capabilities of societies faced with the risk of natural disasters that are believed to be a consequence of global warming.
Working method
The IFRC's activities on climate change are based on analyzing the risks and implications of disasters; creating awareness of the issue; and developing policy and risk reduction programs.
* The name “Red Cross” is a simplified description of the “International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which comprises a) the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC); b) the existing 186 national Red Cross and red Crescent Societies; and c) the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), which coordinates the activities between the 186 national Red Cross Societies.
