OECD
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is one of the world's largest and most reliable sources of comparable statistics, and economic and social data. The OECD collects data, monitors trends, analyses and forecasts economic developments and researches social changes or evolving patterns in trade, environment, agriculture, technology, taxation and more. The OECD and the tools it develops, allows governments to compare policy experiences, seek answers to common problems, identify good practice and coordinate domestic and international policies.
The organization was established in 1961 and has its headquarters in Paris, France, where it employs app. 2,500 professional staff. There are 30 OECD member countries and the organization has a budget (2008) of EUR 342.9 million.
The OECD publishes around 250 new titles per year on its various working areas. The Secretariat works under the strategic directions of the OECD's governing body, the Council. It is the Secretariats job to collect data and produce analysis and policy proposals. This work provides the basis for discussions and possible implementation among the member countries. The process of discussion and implementation is organized in 200 special committees, where representatives from each OECD member country along with observers from other countries meet.
The OECD recognizes global climate change as one of the key concerns of the 21st century. With its potential economic and social consequences, climate change has become a central focus for research and analysis of the OECD. To address climate change and its consequences, the OECD aims to conduct policy-relevant research and analysis; to continuously examine the link between development and climate change which; to include analysis on the linkages between energy and climate change in the OECD Environmental Outlook; to work together with the International Energy Agency; and to participate in UNFCCC meetings.
