G5

G5 is an international coalition of the major developing countries of the world, i.e. China, India, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa. In the ongoing climate change debate, G5 calls for a differentiated burden-sharing to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, meaning that the rich countries of the world should reduce their emissions the most.

In July 2008, the G5 issued a common press release where it reacted to the G8 (the group of the world's eight wealthiest countries) statement, which was attacked for being unambitious and imprecise by the developed countries. In the following G8-G5 joint meeting, also in Toyako, the G8 and the G5 agreed that long-term reductions are need, but still disagreed over the deployment of more precise medium-term reduction commitments.
